This three-day seminar in Mexico City was a collaboration between the Flaherty Film Seminar and the Ambulante Film Festival. Working together with Mexican film curator Mara Fortes, we presented a selection of works from the 60th Anniversary Edition of the Flaherty Film Seminar, in dialogue with the work of seven Mexican artists. The result were seven screening programs curated in response to Mexico’s political and cultural context.
During the seminar we focused on generating a dialogue about political commitment in artistic practice. We discussed how the formal aspects of the audiovisual work have the potential to propose new forms of criticism and social consciousness. We also addressed the question of balance, how to arrive at a form that neither sensationalizes aesthetics nor spectacularizes ethics, and the emphasis on the difference between making films on political subjects and making films politically.
